FAQs

What is Dancesport?

Dancesport is competitive Ballroom and Latin dancing -- tons of fun, great exercise, a welcoming community and one of the fastest growing clubs at UCLA.

How is that different from social ballroom dancing?

We focus on the techniques and performance aspects that make our team members ready to do extremely well at many regional competitions.

Wait, competition...do I have to?

Nope! While we do encourage competition and most instruction is geared towards competing, you will never be required to compete. Instead, many of our non-competing team members come with us and cheer us on as we take on UCSB, UCSD, UCR, Cal, Stanford, Claremont, Caltech, Arizona State, Ohio State, Georgetown University, Cal Poly, and most importantly USC!

Can I compete if I have no experience?

Absolutely! In fact the large majority of our members have no experience with dance whatsoever. All dancesport competition events are organized by the amount of time one has been dancing, so regardless if you have two left feet and never stepped on a dance floor or been dancing all of your life, we have an event for you.

Now, partner dance...do I need to bring a partner?

Nope! We can pair you up when competitions get closer. Feel free to bring friends, but partners are not required.

I am super busy, over enrolled and over involved in club life...what is the time commitment?

It is completely up to you! At a minimum we have 1 hour a week for weekly lessons, beyond that you are invited to up to 10 hours of programming each week with openings in leadership and other fantastic resume opportunities.

Does it cost anything?

Very very little. For complete beginners, the first two weeks are COMPLETELY FREE as a trial period. After that, only $20 covers the rest of the quarter! For continuing students $35 covers the full quarter ($45 for community members), and with over 100 hours of programming available, that works out to less than 35 cents an hour! The cheapest dance lessons of your life.
